The Chance of a Lifetime!

There are times in one’s life where you experience that once in a lifetime opportunity to serve others who are less fortunate. Our trip to Fort Portal, Uganda, was just such an opportunity. It was filled with joy, sorrow, and yet it was the most rewarding time of my life. The people of Fort Portal, Uganda, are a gracious people, who are so appreciative, extremely caring and the most enjoyable people you will ever meet. From the first day at the United States Embassy, to the day we returned to the United States of America, we experienced true kindness, and the Ugandan servant heart showed us how they appreciate the little things in life. When you witness real poverty, real hardship and real depravity, it makes you a different person and you are grateful for the opportunity to serve. What is also more amazing, is the spirit of the Ugandan people and children. They have smiles that will melt your heart and a joy that just tickles your spirit.
The initial ride from Kampala, Uganda to Fort Portal, Uganda was an amazing eight hour ride worthy of strong memories, as you see their patience, kindness and courtesy. They have such a willingness to share their love of life. As we continued on to Fort Portal all of our senses and passions were on overload, as we experienced their food and used the facilities on the side of the road. As we arrived in the Fort Portal village we were met with excitement and anticipation. From the making of bracelets in the school colors of yellow and blue, to breaking out the new soccer balls, you would have thought we were rock stars! They have a great spirit and are full of joy. From leading them in calisthenics, to kicking the new soccer balls around the school, they set our spirits soaring and set an exciting and rewarding tempo for the rest of our visit. Everyone, from the young boy in a wheelchair to the girl who is a soccer star, they were SO HAPPY AND APPRECIATIVE!
As our visit continued, we were able to meet the villagers in their homes, and witnessed firsthand their needs for basic necessities such as healthcare, food, water, electricity, training and encouragement. They ALWAYS had smiles on their beautiful faces. We were able to worship with them on Sunday, which was an experience in itself, but the highlight of the trip was the excitement of the people celebrating the graduation ceremony. The parade through the village was a highlight for the community which ended with showcasing the gifts that we were able to bring (computers, clothes, shoes, mattresses, and tools). Now the lasting memories and friendships are cemented. What a reward it was to meet the needs of others and be able to return home with a message of hope; to convey to others, the real needs of the children and community of Fort Portal, Uganda.
